Daily Update: Fire Alarms, Ant Infestations & TBR Lists

Hey again,

Interesting title for this one, eh? And yet it adequately sums up my day.

I awoke this morning after sleeping through three alarms and Kumar’s loud knocking on my door (I asked him to be my alarm clock) and got up at the undignified hour of 11:30.

This is what happens when I have days off…

I then proceeded to sit in bed and create yet another new blog and wrote the first part of a short story on said new blog.

Then at about 12 ish I decided it was time to get a shower, you know, because that’s what normal functioning people tend to do (except usually a lot earlier).

I was finally ready by about 1pm. Now, reader you may be wondering how on earth it teddy dancetook a gal like me roughly an hour to get ready. I could lie and say it was my hair – but I have a pixie cut so that would fail.

The reality was this. I decided to dance around my room listening to my epic “Happy Jammys” playlist on spotify singing into my hairbrush.

I will admit I have now got a bruise on my right arm from struggling to both sing along and put on my shirt. Because multi-tasking isn’t my forte and I clearly put singing along to Runaway by Del Shannon above my own safety.

Moving swiftly on from my lack of adulthood capabilities… I walked into the kitchen to grab some shopping bags only to be met with the sight of a billion *exaggeration* evil ants running along our counter.

Aaaaaaaghhh!

Admittedly, I did rage out a bit and started smacking them all with a piece of kitchen towel and a lone glass that some drunkard had left in our flat eons ago.

I then went and did my food shop at Lidl and then came back to see them pretty much gone. Until like five seconds ago, when they came back again. But it’s cool I have let Tom the security guard know and he’s going to get the exterminators in.

mahThen the fire alarm went off and I swear to gawd the world just doesn’t want me to revise today…

I did get some reading done today which leads me onto the next point of business. My TBR list.

I finished both England, England by Julian Barnes and Crossing the River this month. And I am planning to have read A Clockwork Orange and Much Ado About Nothing as well.

Well, there’s not really anything else of interest to write right now and I guess I should actually do some more work…. Uuuuuugh.

Chat soon!

Daily Update: 4 am Walks and Smashing Teacups

No, the latter part of the title is not the name of some super cool band but rather the reality of my terrible waitressing skills.

*Sigh*

Today was an interestingly bland day. I woke up upside down, after topping and tailing with Natalie. I had only gotten a few hours sleep last night due to my flat mate waking me up and then not being able to go back to sleep.

So, logically that would mean the four of us- Me, Nat, Kumar and his friend all going on a walk at 4 am! I am a tad mental to say the least. But yeah it was pretty weird and short lived.

Amazingly, there was a shop still open, one of those gamer ones in which they pull all night Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments or whatever. Now, I’m not dissing them because I personally love that shop. But Kumar’s friend wanted to go in on our way back, so as we all stood outside (in coats and pjs) he went in and looked around.

The door was wide open, and as we walked round the corner of the shop to wait for him instead of by the door Kumar said, “It’s best we keep out of view, them lot will jump on a girl if they saw one.” Savage, right?!

It gets worse.

We weren’t out of earshot so everyone in the shop heard what he said and according to his friend kept giving him dirty looks as he walked back out to meet us.

Darn it!

But yes, surviving on very little sleep (and very little at work tomorrow if I don’t go to bed soon) I went into work and managed to stumble my way over everything. The clumsiness was extreme today. Three broken teacups, dropping a whole load of clean cutlery when refilling and nearly tripping over someones dog.

How am I still employed?

Anyway, I came back absolutely knackered and instead of doing work like I should have, I instead listened to sad music and watched a couple things on netflix.

I had a little cry at one point (due to the sad soppy music, sometimes you just need to let it out) and didn’t realise that Natalie had opened the window before she left earlier!

Gahhh I hope no-one heard me. But knowing my luck they probably did. Never mind.

Speak to you tomorrow, I have a book review I’m just finishing up!

Short Story: Nostalgic Love

1

The wind blew her long red tresses behind her back as she walked the ever so familiar trail around her old stomping ground.

The nostalgia hit her like a truck, and she was taken back to her university days and the evenings they had spent out getting wasted at the nearby pub.

So many fun nights and adventures. Everything was easier when your friends had been just a stones throw away.

And now she was back, five years since finishing her degree. She had been coming back home from an out of town work trip when she saw the exit on the motorway. Forgoing all rational thoughts she indicated left and turned off.

And now here she was.

She had a sudden flash back to their nights out clubbing, where they would all dance together and then he would grab her attention, standing out against all the masses of people. And it always ended up being just the two of them dancing at the end of the night.

She was thinking this as she walked into the old pub, her heeled black boots making the floor boards groan underfoot appearing to agree with her that yes, a lot of time had passed.

And yet it felt exactly the same.

What was she doing here though? She walked up to the bar and ordered a gin and tonic. She downed it all in one as she watched a young couple flirt and chat together in the corner. They twisted their hands together and as the music played they leaned in close to each other, whispering and laughing as they drank each other up.

Her life since then had been one of a divorcee, no children and with an empty void to fill. She wandered what it was like to feel that thrill of new love or even lust again…

2

“Aurora!” He yelled from across the bar. I wobbled over, feeling the alcohol having gone to my head. I was a light weight as per usual.

I tripped and fell into him, and grabbed his hand. I looked up into his deep hazel eyes and felt butterflies tumble around my stomach. His gaze was intense, and it felt like the most sober and dawning moment that either of us had ever experienced.

I brushed the event off and realised that I had been staring at the two teens for a little too long. The whole affair had been silly, he had lived in Scotland and I was down in Chelsea. And we had both been seeing different people, he had a long distance relationship going and I had gone to university with my childhood sweetheart.

The only time either of us had acted on the mutual feelings that we’d had for each other was at a club, alone and in a dark corner when with the adrenaline flowing through our bloodstreams mixing and mingling with the alcohol we had been consuming all night long, we leaned in and kissed.

I remembered the shadows dancing off of his pale and freckly face, as he smirked adoringly down at me. And in that instant everything had been perfect until a curt voice sliced through the silence and like a deafening screech drew our brief rendezvous to an end.

“Smile!” Off went a flash as one of the annoying club photographers snapped a picture. Our guilty faces were caught on camera, frozen in time.

3

“Can I get you another, lady?” I enquired from behind the bar as I wiped down the surfaces with a beer soaked cloth.

I only looked up when I heard a muffled gasp and had to stifle my own when I came face to face with the one girl I thought I would never see again after graduation.

“Raphael?” She asked hesitantly, her eyes were the same green they had been all those years ago. They were just as big and bright and although she had clearly matured, she was just as sultry and hopelessly tempting as before.

Her hair was still unruly and long, swishing around her hips like a fierce mane. And I felt myself transported to all the years we had spent together and the abrupt farewell that we had both felt obligated to have.

I realised that I still hadn’t replied and with a jolt I snapped back into the situation at hand.

“Hi! Long time no see!” I blurted out, and saw her eyebrows raise in surprise at my nervous manner. I had never been a shy guy but rather the opposite with a confident disposition and quite a loud mouth.

Oh shit, I thought to myself. Here I am behind a bar, still in the same city and town where we went university. I felt the need to explain myself rather than look as though I was hopelessly stuck in the past.

“So you’re a bartender now? I didn’t realise you worked here, I was just on the motor way and thought I’d drop by this place for old times sake,” She gulped down her second gin and tonic, and I too decided to pour myself one even if I was technically on the job.

There was an awkward silence, and then the unifying clink of our glasses as we set the down on the counter at the same time.

“Yeah, well it was more I went into becoming a lawyer and found it incredibly boring so came back here and bought this place. I’m my own boss now.” I replied and watched her eyes light up and that familiar half smile dance across her lips.

“I am so jealous of you, we had so many great memories here. I guess I really missed this place and just wanted to come back to it to be honest with you. Life’s been… tough…” She trailed off and fidgeted with her finger, where I noticed a tan line from where a wedding ring had obviously once been.

My heart jumped a little and all the things I had never said and done came flooding into my mind as her face blushed a deep red.

“Well, have a nice evening. I didn’t mean to bore you Raph I was just passing through. But I’m glad things are going well for you and that you’re all settled now.” She stood and walked towards the door. My mouth was fully agape and I got deja vu to the last time that she had walked out of my life.

Without thinking, I hopped over the counter and dashed out the door after her. She was standing in the street with shivering in the rain as she attempted to find her car.

I heard her grumbling under her breath.

“So… so stupid! You idiot! Of course he’s settled. Of course he’s doing well. I should have never walked in there.” She berated herself under her breath.

Silently, and in that joking way that I used to do to her at uni- I crept up behind her and wrapped my arms tight around her and shook as hard as I could.

She let out a little yelp, her body going rigid before relaxing into me. She giggled girlishly and twisting around they both melded into one.

4

It was like no time had passed, and as though the two most identifiable landmarks in their lives had merged into one perfect moment.

THE END.

Hi guys, it’s me here and I was just leaving this little note to apologise for being absent for so long but that hopefully I’ll be spitting out more short stories in the run up to Christmas. So far I have completed two! I hope everyone’s having a lovely Christmas and just wanted to remind everyone to jump on every opportunity they can! :)xxx – picture credit : found from Wikihow online.Β

Suicide Squad, Baby Ducklings, University & Books on my TBR List.

Hi there,

Long time no see, eh? Well for all those who wish to know I got into the University of Nottingham the other day to do a joint honour of English and History! Whoop whoop! I start late September and will update this blog as soon as I know what the hecks going on.

So onto other things. I went to see Suicide Squad today and over to Alex’s house today for the first time since our little hiccup. Everything was fine, thank goodness and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. They even have two little ducklings called Eggbert and Sweetie in an incubator at the moment. Soon to be new members of their animal family.

But yes, my thoughts on Suicide Squad? Well, seeing as Harley Quinn is one of my harley geopfavourite characters of all time I have been looking forward to seeing this movie for at least a year and although in my opinion I loved it, there were parts and patches that felt…. uh a little undeveloped.

I know quite a bit about Miss Quinzel and thought that her and the Jokers characters- although having flashbacks (not all of which made sense)- weren’t as focused on which was a shame since they are meant to be the main characters of the comics at least. That and the fact that Poison Ivy was absent really upset me.

So although I thought it was a good stand alone movie, I found the focus on Deadshot (Will Smith) to be overly emphasised despite him not being as major a character in the series as Harley and the others. So I could see why some die hard fans may have been a tad miffed – he was the core focus of the movie and the development of characters wasn’t as balanced as it should have been.

harley pinkBut Oh well, I still loved Harley ( me and Alex actually went to Halloween as Harley and the Joker last year… I’ll see if I can dig out the picture).

Anyway, onto my ever growing TBR list. I’ll admit I am in the middle of quite a number of novels at the moment but here are the major ones.

By the way I will be starting a series of book reviews and am open to receiving requests (email me if you’re interested) as well as joining forces with other bloggers to write some posts together. I still have a Liebster award post to get too as well… darn I got busy quickly.

TBR List:

  • The Princess Bride by William Goldmanprincess bride
  • The Monk by Matthew Lewis
  • Super Better by Jane McGonigal
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Yep, it’s a lot of reading to be doing and that with a publishing internship and being a team member of another site means that I am constantly writing.

Which is actually quite fun, so I’m not complaining.

Anyway, I’ll post more tomorrow!
